Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are needed when you are missing some of your natural teeth. Partial dentures can be a great option for you and can fit seamlessly next to your natural teeth to get you back to being confident with your smile!

During the appointment process, we will select a tooth color option with you to make sure that your smile looks natural and matches your natural teeth as best we can! If you have never worn a denture before, allow yourself between 1-6 weeks to adapt to your new dentures. Before we fabricate your partial dentures, we will need to consult with your dentist to ensure your teeth are healthy enough to support a new partial dentures. It is vital for your long term oral health that we ensure all proper steps are taken.

                                                                                    Pros:

  • Restores your smile
  • Regain your confidence
  • Regain your ability to chew properly
  • Helps keep the remaining teeth in their proper position
  • Protects the gums while eating
  • Relatively easy to clean
  • More affordable

                                                                  Cons:

  • Adjusting period to the feel of the partial denture in the mouth
  • May have metal showing on some noticeable teeth when you smile
  • Needs to be removed and cleaned after meals
  • Will need relining after 2-3 years
  • Replaced after 5-6 years
  • Depending on which teeth are missing, may have slight movement while eating

Implants can allow for us to use less metal holding onto your natural teeth and can allow for a more comfortable, secure fit. We work alongside the dentist and can fabricate a partial denture or implant supported bridge to the implants.

Materials

Thinking about getting a partial denture may be an intimidating prospect for you. The idea of having metal in the mouth may be something you do not want to consider, or you may even have a sensitivity to metal. There are four different materials we use for making the framework for the partials:

  • Cast metal - very strong, gives good strength to help keep the frame thin while providing protection to the teeth and gums. It also gains vertical support from the teeth which protects the teeth and gums during chewing.  Having the framework made with metal is the best material option.
  • Acetal Resin - similar design to the metal frame, but made with a flexible resin - no metal! The clasps that hold on to the teeth can be designed to have similar color match to your teeth! It is more difficult to tighten once it starts to become loose.
  • Valplast flexible material - a flexible material that has clear clasps that hold on to the teeth. The main concerns with this material is that it is difficult to repair, and hard to make tight again once it starts to get loose.
  • Acrylic, transitional partial  - made with the same hard acrylic as complete dentures are made from. They can be a great temporary option, especially to replace a single front tooth. Metal clasps can be added if desired. This is considered the least quality option.
